Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Common Questions About Therapy

Starting therapy can bring up a lot of questions, whether you're looking for support for yourself, your child, or your family.

Below are answers to many of the questions I hear most often. If you don't see your question here, I'm always happy to talk with you during a free 15-minute consultation.

Getting Started

How do I know if therapy is right for me or my child?

If you're wondering whether therapy might help, it's okay to reach out. You don't have to wait until things feel overwhelming or reach a crisis point. Many families begin therapy simply because they want support navigating a difficult season, understanding behaviors, or building stronger relationships.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can contact Find Your Village Therapy directly to schedule an appointment.

Do I need a diagnosis before starting therapy?

No. A formal diagnosis is not required to begin therapy. Many families seek support during times of stress, transition, or uncertainty before a diagnosis is ever considered. When clinically appropriate, diagnoses may be provided to support treatment planning or out-of-network insurance reimbursement.

What happens during the first appointment?

The first session is an opportunity to get to know one another. We'll talk about your concerns, your goals, your family's history, and determine the best path forward together.

Early Childhood Therapy

What age do you work with?

I specialize in infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and young children, while also providing therapy for older children, adolescents, parents, and families.

Is play therapy effective?

Young children communicate through play long before they can fully explain their feelings with words. Play-based therapy provides a developmentally appropriate way for children to process emotions, build coping skills, and strengthen relationships.

How do I know if my child needs therapy?

Every child has difficult days. Therapy may be helpful if your child is experiencing frequent anxiety, intense tantrums, emotional outbursts, behavioral changes, difficulty with relationships, or challenges that are affecting daily life at home or school.

Do parents participate in therapy?

Yes. Parent involvement is an important part of therapy, especially for younger children. Supporting the caregiver-child relationship often leads to the most meaningful and lasting change.

Does my child age out of therapy at age five?

No. While early childhood mental health is one of my specialties, children who begin therapy before age five do not automatically stop services because of a birthday. Therapy continues based on each child's developmental needs and clinical recommendations.

Family Therapy

What does a family therapist do?

Family therapy helps improve communication, strengthen relationships, and support families through challenges such as behavioral concerns, life transitions, parenting stress, grief, anxiety, trauma, and relationship difficulties.

Can parents attend sessions together?

Absolutely. Depending on your goals, therapy may include one parent, both parents, caregivers, or the entire family.

What kinds of family concerns do you help with?

I work with families navigating parenting challenges, behavioral concerns, anxiety, trauma, attachment, communication difficulties, major life transitions, grief, and emotional regulation.

Pregnancy, Postpartum & New Parents

What is perinatal mental health?

Perinatal mental health refers to emotional well-being during pregnancy and throughout the first year after childbirth. It includes concerns such as anxiety, depression, birth trauma, adjustment challenges, and emotional stress.

Can therapy help after having a baby?

Yes. Therapy can provide support as you adjust to parenthood, process your birth experience, manage anxiety or depression, strengthen attachment with your baby, and care for your own emotional well-being.

What if I don't have postpartum depression?

You do not need a diagnosis to benefit from therapy. Many parents seek support simply because the transition into parenthood feels harder than expected.

Do you help families after a NICU stay?

Yes. NICU experiences can be emotionally overwhelming for parents and caregivers. Therapy offers space to process those experiences and support healing for the entire family.

Trauma & EMDR

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps people process and heal from traumatic or distressing experiences.

Do you use trauma-informed therapy?

Yes. Every aspect of my work is grounded in trauma-informed, relationship-based care that respects each person's experiences and unique story.
